“Canada’s Theatre Beautiful,” the Runnymede, as it appeared inside when opened in 1927. It was built in an ‘atmospheric’ style to simulate open air, with a curved azure blue ceiling surrounded by a simulated garden wall. A $250 Brenograph machine projected stars, clouds, moon and planes onto the blue ‘sky’. A sign backstage told staff, “Turn out the stars before you leave!” The interior is in a Spanish style with walls of ivory stucco, a gold shell motif cornice and gold light sconces.
