The Swansea Historical Society preserves and promotes the history of the former Village of Swansea that was amalgamated by the City of Toronto in 1967
“Canada’s Theatre Beautiful,” the Runnymede, as it appeared inside when opened in 1927. It was built in an ‘atmospheric’ style to simulate open air, with a curved azure blue ceiling surrounded by a simulated garden wall. A $250 Brenograph machine projected stars, clouds, moon and planes onto the blue ‘sky’. A sign backstage told staff, “Turn out the stars before you leave!” The interior is in a Spanish style with walls of ivory stucco, a gold shell motif cornice and gold light sconces. The auditorium seated 1500 people, had a children’s playroom on the balcony and had a canopy entrance
