Then and now

Herne Hill, the home of John Ellis was located on the height of land that is now Woodland Heights. This 1900 view looks north from about the Queensway and shows one of Swansea’s two wooden sidewalks on the east side of Ellis Avenue as it winds it way north around Herne Hill. Photo by R. C. Smith. A rare panorama of Swansea

A rare Swansea panorama from the 1920s, this view is of Willard Ave near Bloor St. Looking north, you can see an old TTC streetcar passing by on Bloor St W. On the right is Mayfield Ave looking east from Willard. You can see the eventual home of Windermere United Church on the north side – and homes on Windermere Ave – and Durie St. in the far distance.
